Southern Area Drakes Drum Award 2024

Southern Area Drakes Drum Award 2024

We are glad to share the fantastic news that Salisbury Unit has been awarded The Drakes Drum at this past weekend's Southern Area Conference.

This is a Southern Area Award for achieving the highest number of Seamanship Qualifications per cadet, and has been awarded based on the efforts of the whole ship's company of Salisbury Unit for 2024.

A special thank you to all our cadet forces adult volunteers who continue to deliver the Sea Cadet Experience to such high standards, and to all our cadets who are always so eager to learn.

Congratulations to our Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets who participated in the Wessex District Drill and Piping Competition on Sunday 16th February. Following lots of practice, polishing, ironing, and sewing, it was all worth it with some great results. Thank you to our cadet forces adult volunteers for giving up their spare time to train the cadets ready for this competition.

It was a chilly, very calm and mostly windless day at Spinnaker Sailing Club today, so it was a good job we weren't sailing. We had a group of Juniors and Sea Cadets powerboating and learning how to keep warm! We now have a few more Power Level 1 qualified Juniors and Cadets and a few gaining experience as they work towards Power Level 2.

We were racing at Spinnaker Sailing Club yesterday in the Icicle Series, with four RS Quests and two RS Zests. We were also providing Safety Boat cover for the Club racing. Well done to all our Cadets who braved the cold and challenging conditions (not much wind).

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

2024 was another fantastic year for TS Salisbury, we were busy! Along with our usual programme of training, sailing, rowing, camp, and field exercises, last year the ships company were also active in the community, supporting local and national events.

We took part in commemorations for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in June as well as activities marking 200 years of the RNLI. Cadets were involved in the launch of the Salisbury Poppy Appeal in October, and we were on parade in the City for Remembrance Sunday in November with 80 Juniors, Sea Cadets, and Royal Marines Cadets taking part this year.

In December, we celebrated the combined achievements of the unit during our annual presentation evening. We were joined by Southern Area Officer Commander (SCC) Gary Bassett RNR and Wessex District Officer Lieutenant Commander (SCC) Lisa Grinter RNR, who presented qualifications, promotions, and awards in recognition of the hard work that the cadets and staff put in during the year.

As we begin the New Year, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all the members of TS Salisbury, cadets, staff, and the Unit Management Team for making 2024 such a memorable year. As well as the parents of our Juniors, Sea Cadets, and Royal Marines Cadets for their ongoing support of the unit.

Yours aye,

S/Lt (SCC) J Bond RNR
